"Which breed should I keep?" is one of the most common questions we hear. There is no single right answer — the best breed depends on your feed, land size, climate, and whether you sell on volume or on quality. Here's an honest comparison of the three breeds most Kenyan dairy farmers choose between.
Holstein-Friesian — the volume breed
The black-and-white Friesian is the highest-volume dairy breed in the world, and our flagship herd. Well-bred, well-fed Friesians in the Kenyan highlands can milk 40–50 litres a day. That volume comes at a cost: they are large cows with high feed and water demands, and they are less tolerant of heat and poor management. Friesians reward farmers who can feed and manage them well.

Ayrshire — the hardy all-rounder
The red-and-white Ayrshire is the practical choice for many medium-scale and semi-zero-grazing farms. She is a hardy, efficient grazer with good disease resistance, producing 25–30 litres of rich, high-butterfat milk on less pampering than a Friesian. If your management or feed supply is variable, an Ayrshire is more forgiving.

Jersey — the efficiency breed
The small, fawn-coloured Jersey produces less total milk (20–25 litres) but the richest — often 5% or more butterfat. Because she is small, she eats less and converts feed to milk very efficiently, calves easily, and is fertile. On a per-kilo-of-feed or per-acre basis, Jerseys are hard to beat, and they shine where you are paid for butterfat or making value-added products.

So which should you choose?
Ask yourself three questions: How much quality feed can I reliably supply? How intensive is my management? And how am I paid — on litres or on quality? Chasing Friesian volume without the feed to back it up leads to thin, disappointing cows. A well-matched Ayrshire or Jersey often earns more, more reliably.
